Delegation- Doing the work vs leading

yashica crumpton

Today’s podcast is a replay all about delegation and learning how to lead the work vs do the work. It’s taken from our most recent series of 21 lessons in leadership we did over the summer.

In today’s discussion we will be covering Delegation so you can shift from doing the work vs leading. The reason why you have risen to the top and are now in a leadership position may be partly based on your past performance which is fine, but we did discuss how leaning on that could be the kiss of death.

The real reason and purpose for your leadership is to focus on higher value activities and team development. Many leaders (and team members that they lead) make the mistake of thinking that if they are always jumping in and helping the team or being totally “hands on” that they are a good leader and while that is needed from time to time, it is not what you were hired for. At that point you are no longer a leader right? You have things that you are accountable for that only you can do, that’s, in essence, why you are in a leadership position.

You need to understand that you can’t and shouldn’t be in the trenches all the time or doing everything and in today’s discussion we will talk about why that is.

Top reason you struggle in leadership roles

yashica crumpton

Today’s podcast is a replay all about why you struggle in leadership roles and it’s taken from our most recent series of 21 lessons in leadership we did over the summer.

In today's discussion we will be covering the top reason you struggle in leadership. You probably are going to think it has to do with your team, or your own leaders, or everything else you can’t control… but the thing is… the number one reason you struggle with leadership is due to your mindset. Failure to approach the work you do with a good mindset is a guaranteed marker that you will hardly ever achieve long term success. Good leaders can develop crappy mindsets at any time and oftentimes they creep in on you insidiously, so let’s take a deeper look at how your poor mindset is the top reason you struggle in leadership.

On August 28th, I’ll be holding a free class focused on Overcoming Imposter Syndrome.

I’m tired of watching careers and therefore healthcare suffer because we have talented people that won’t pursue promotion or contribute to improving healthcare in powerful ways because anxiety, self doubt, and fear get in the way of some of our best talent in healthcare stepping up and stepping out.

You don’t know how many times I run into leaders in healthcare and aspiring leaders that hold themselves back and try not to stand out because they don’t believe in themselves even though they’ve proven themselves to be worthy.

If you can relate or you know someone in healthcare that struggles with this, I wanted to spread the word that on Aug 28th, I will be holding a totally free class to teach everything I’ve learned to combat this feeling that we call Imposter Syndrome.

How poor decisions cost you your job

yashica crumpton

Today’s Leading in Healthcare episode— How poor decisions cost you your job— is a recording from one of our 21 days of livestreams episodes.

How poor decisions cost you your job. As leaders, as our accountability and responsibilities increase, the decisions we make hold a certain weight. Our choices don’t only impact ourselves, they usually impact several other things or people as well. If you make poor decisions, you are costing your organization negative operational and financial outcomes and could eventually impact your ability to provide for yourself and your family. I’ve seen it time and time again.... poor decisions cost you your job In today’s episode, I’ll discuss how poor decisions cost you your job and what to do about it.

Your personal problems are impacting your work

yashica crumpton

Today’s episode, Your Personal Problems are Impacting Your Work, is a part of a daily livestream series we just wrapped up.

Did you know your personal problems are impacting your work? As leaders we aren’t immune to things that are happening in our personal life. Just last year, I had just arrived at an organization ready to hit the ground running and ready to help them improve their operations in a particular area and life punched me in the face via the loss of a family member. Did the work stop… no… but neither did the trauma and grief of the loss.

Did it impact my ability to be as present and as focused as I normally would be? Of course, I’m human.

What I was going through was situational but take a good look at your life… your relationships, your emotional state, your mental wellbeing…. If your stuff is not on point, I can guarantee that your leadership is not on point.

No matter how well you think you’re able to hide it.

But what the hell are you supposed to do about it?

Join in on today’s disscussion where I will help you understand how your personal problems are impacting your work and some things you can do about it

Does your team hate working with you?

Does your team hate working with you? Today’s episode is a part of our 21 day daily livestream series that started on July 18, 2022.

Does your team hate you? It may be surprising to know that even if your team seems OK on the surface, that they don’t like you.  Especially if they love or need their job so they just suck it up.

Unfortunately, you probably won’t find out until you are about to lose your job or you find yourself leading a toxic team

But what the hell are you supposed to do about it?

Are you at risk for burnout?

yashica crumpton

Are you at risk for burnout? Today’s episode is a part of our 21 day daily livestream series that started on July 18, 2022.

Exhaustion on all levels (physical, emotional, spiritual, mental) can feel like you can’t keep your head above water or meet the demands of the job. You’re overwhelmed, you feel drained, and you’re at the point where you don’t think you can keep up with all the things you have on your plate.

Or if you’re not there yet…. Some signs that you’re at risk for burnout are feeling detached and disengaged… you just come in, do what you gotta do to make it thru, then go home and crash… maybe you are starting to feel ineffective and the impact that you wanted to create is falling flat even to the point where you wonder if you’re making a difference and start passing on larger opportunities because you doubt you have what it takes right now to take on more.

This episode will help you understand more about burnout, help you understand if you’re at risk for burnout, and give you some tips on how to reverse the damage.

Top skills every leader should have

yashica crumpton

In some of our past few episodes we’ve been examining top skills every leader should have. There is lot’s of advice on how to be a better leader but most next level leadership training is all the same. Improve your skills, network, boost your communication skills and so on.

I want to give you some tips to take your leadership to the next level this week that really matter. Learn some of the core skills it takes to be a leader in healthcare on this week’s episode.

How emotional intelligence makes you a better leader

yashica crumpton

Here on the Leading in Healthcare Podcast, we do things differently. Leadership resources always focus on what you should be doing, not who you should be becoming. Even in the minimal orientation some of us leaders get, its all about our intelligence and completing tasks, rarely is it about being more perceptive, more self aware, and being able to act on information and energy that transcends the 5 senses.

We end up doing ourselves a disservice, though, because the skills that I mentioned fold into something called Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence helps you become a better leader because it helps you understand and respond to emotions, transcend stressful moments, understand how you impact your team, and give you a heightened sense of situational awareness.

Today’s episode was inspired by an article I read from Farmwell Wisconsin and it has great tips to help you understand emotional intelligence and has some top tips from Tony Robbins on how to grow your emotional intelligence so that you can become a better leader.

How to handle conflict on a team

yashica crumpton

In this week’s brief episode, I will be sharing some of the tips I used recently to handle conflict on a team that I’ve been collaborating with. The workplace is one of the environments in our life where we have to effectively interact with people that may have different perspectives than our own. While the beauty of this may be the diversity and creative collaboration that can occur, these differences can sometimes lead to conflict.

I wanted to share some of my tips with you in the moment that I use to handle conflict on a team while they were still fresh on my mind.

I would love for you to comment with your top tip on how to handle conflict on a team and share this episode with someone that would love to learn these tips.

How to set boundaries

yashica crumpton

Today’s episode is about something that most leaders struggle with…. setting healthy boundaries. To be an impactful leader, you have to learn to draw a line between acceptable and non-acceptable behavior and also between what’s important and what’s not.

These boundaries help you communicate expectations and increase your sense of wellbeing and the level of control you feel you have over yourself and the projects or tasks and teams that you are responsible for.

Most leaders that I work with have very unclear boundaries or they lack boundaries… or if they think leadership is all about control and micro managing, they have rigid boundaries. Some signs that you need help with boundaries are:

  • Having a team where it feels unsafe to communicate needs, feelings, and voice issues.

  • Noticing a lack of engagement with your team.

  • And personally and professionally, recognizing co-dependent behaviors and lack of understanding of roles and responsibilities.

These are just a few of the things that I notice but all of these problems with boundaries often spiral into dysfunctional teams and even abusive interpersonal relationships at their worse.

In this episode, I want to share with you some quick ideas about boundaries and what you can do to improve them so that you foster relationships within your team and your personal life built on respect.

As always, if you struggle with boundaries and would like to work with me as your coach on ways that you can become a better leader in your professional life and your personal life, you can learn more about working with me by going to www.yashicalind.com
